NEW COPPER DEPOSIT “OYUUT” DISCOVERED IN ORKHON PROVINCE

A new copper deposit named Oyuut has been discovered in Orkhon Province, covering the territories of Bayan-Undur and Jargalant soums, as a result of recent exploration activities. Preliminary estimates indicate that the deposit holds 357 million tonnes of ore reserves.

This discovery is particularly significant because the deposit is comparable in scale to the Erdenet deposit, which has long served as a cornerstone of the state budget. The new find is expected to create fresh opportunities for economic growth in Mongolia and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.

Prime Minister G. Zandanshatar has instructed the relevant authorities to prepare a feasibility study for establishing a processing plant with a capacity of 5–10 million tonnes of ore per year, based on the newly discovered deposit. Preliminary assessments suggest that the Oyuut deposit could be operated for 30–35 years.

The exploration work was independently carried out by geologists from Erdenet Mining Corporation, while the company’s engineers will participate in the future development and construction activities. The Oyuut deposit is located just 8 kilometers from the Erdenetiin Ovoo deposit and only 3 kilometers from the Industrial and Technology Park’s infrastructure, offering highly favorable conditions for development.

The utilization of the Oyuut deposit is expected to contribute to the National Wealth Fund and provide a significant boost not only to the development of Erdenet city and Orkhon Province but also to the economic growth of Mongolia’s northern region and the country as a whole.

On September 7, 2025, Prime Minister G. Zandanshatar visited the site to review preparations for bringing the deposit into operation.
